Why I Love Wrestling: Candice LeRae

Simply put, Candice LeRae is the best female wrestler on the planet. It isn’t because she has tons of geek cred, which she does (enough that she is Geekade’s official favorite wrestler). It isn’t because she’s attractive, which she is, hell it’s not even because she’s Canadian (we here at Geekade are big time Canadaphiles). See, Candice is not just a pretty girl that learned to wrestle so that she could further some sort of, let’s be honest in regards to most “divas”, movie star/model career aspiration. She is a wrestler first and foremost. Candice has a move set to rival any superstar or diva on any roster. She can grapple, fly, use submissions, and brawl as good as any woman or man in any company around the world. She also, has the best ring attire in the history of ever. I mean just look at that picture above, it’s amazing.

Originally from Canada, LeRae is most famous for her work in various American independent promotions, most notably Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. What makes Candice special is her ability to wrestle not only other female wrestlers, but male wrestlers as well and to have those matches make sense. She has twice competed for the PWG Heavyweight Championship, once against Human Tornado and once against Adam Cole, losing both times but looking strong. She has been both a singles champion, in AWS and FWE, and a tag team champion with Joey Ryan in PWG, FSP, and Dreamwave.

Her current run with Joey Ryan as the World’s Cutest Tag Team has produced some great matches. When they wrestle either another intergender team, or two males, it works. The storytelling done in the ring is believable and hard not to get wrapped up in. As a fan, you want Candice to win. You want her to kick the boys ass. You want her to be a champion and prove that women deserve equal treatment and equal respect. She may not have set out to do that, but it’s hard not to see it when she performs. The match presented below is one of the craziest I have ever seen. It’s got everything there is to love about professional wrestling and highlights just how incredible Candice really is. These are just the highlights though. Watch this and then buy the DVD immediately. The whole card was great.

At the end of the day, Candice deserves a spot in the big time. I have no idea if she wants one, but she could be the most over wrestler in the history of WWE if they were to bring her in. Until that time, give her your support. Hit up www.prowrestlingtees.com and pick up a shirt inspired by the Legend of Zelda, Rugrats, Powerpuff Girls, Animaniacs, The SImpsons, or my personal favorite the He-Man and She-Ra Xmas special, follow her on twitter (@CandiceLeRae), watch the Candice and Joey Show on youtube, go see a show she is on and let the promoters know she is the reason you went.

Dan Ryan

Dan Ryan was once the most feared and respected luchador in the world until the "Great DDT Disaster of '85" where Dan unfortunately DDT'd his opponent so hard into the ground that he opened a gate to the underworld that let unholy things into this world. After that, Dan refused to wrestle anymore but he's found new life writing and talking about his favorite hobbies here at Geekade. He pens the weekly Why I Love Wrestling series, co-hosts The Stone Age Gamer Podcast, expertly pairs video games with beer, and much, much more. Dan is a personality that Geekade simply would not be the same without.
