Sometimes it’s your first scare sticks with you the longest. I’ve been a reader of horror and suspense for as long as I can remember, and my imagination is generally scarier than any movie I’ve watched. However, while after most movies and books I have a vague feeling of “it was scary, but ehh…” no real lasting damage, there is one movie that I can vividly recall how scared I was and the plague of nightmares it caused. At the tender age of nine, in a properly darkened family room; my family watched Disney’s Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes leaving a lasting fear.
I was in love with most of the characters though. I especially found Mr. Dark (Jonathon Price) and the Dust witch (Pam Greer) fascinating, if a little unsettling. My fear of the spiders never stopped me from obsessively watching the movie over and over again though. I can’t wait to show my own kids. Come this time of year, always remember:
“Beware the autumn people… Where do they come from? The dust. Where do they go? The grave….The spider-web hears them, trembles- breaks. Such are the autumn people. Beware of them.”—Ray Bradbury
