Why I Love Wrestling: Match of the Year

This was tough. There were so many good matches this year. We, the fans, were spoiled and spoiled rotten. Some of the best matches of the year were featured in this column. Some we didn’t get to. And my personal runner up of the year well, I really wanted to give it the top spot. You see, I have daughters and in watching them grow and develop into people I want them to be able to do anything they want. I want them to break through the gender stereotypes and glass ceilings they will eventually face. And while Sasha Banks and Bayley had an absolutely incredible match that told an amazing story, it fell just short. Like, by a hair. A thin, old man hair. To Shinsuke Nakamura and Kota Ibushi. The IWGP Intercontinental Championship match between these two at Wrestle Kingdom 9 was an absolute classic. It had everything you could want in a match. The story was well told. The athleticism was insane. The fan response was great. It was quite simply the best match of the year. Check it out below and check back here next week and each and every week following for more coverage on the sport of professional wrestling and why I love it.

Dan Ryan

Dan Ryan was once the most feared and respected luchador in the world until the "Great DDT Disaster of '85" where Dan unfortunately DDT'd his opponent so hard into the ground that he opened a gate to the underworld that let unholy things into this world. After that, Dan refused to wrestle anymore but he's found new life writing and talking about his favorite hobbies here at Geekade. He pens the weekly Why I Love Wrestling series, co-hosts The Stone Age Gamer Podcast, expertly pairs video games with beer, and much, much more. Dan is a personality that Geekade simply would not be the same without.
