WILW: Match of the Year

Normally, in regards to end of the year lists, one usually waits until the actual end of the year to decide on their particular “best of.” The internet is known for many things and year end best of lists are chief among them. We here at Geekade are no different. I have, for the last little bit now, contributed my share of lists to mark the passing of another 365 days ’round the sun. And I planned on doing it again this year with Match of the Year. Except now, I’m not going to. I’m not going to because Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada had their second match of the year, and second singles match together period, this past weekend. And if we are being honest, it is not just the best match any of us will see this year, it is the best match many of us will likely ever see. It’s all downhill from here.

You see back in January at Wrestle Kingdom, Okada and Omega had their first ever match together. That match, the main event of the night, earned itself a 6 star rating from Dave Meltzer. Meltzer has been grading matches for a very long time and never once, not one single time, had he ever given a match more than 5 stars. A five star Meltzer rating was a badge of honor. Omega/Okada I got six. (every one of them deserved) I was certain it was going to be match of the year, no question. But then, Dominion. And their second match. And the second time Dave Meltzer had to go beyond five stars. (6.25 this time around) I won’t spoil the ending here. I want you to experience it clean. It is 60 minutes of pure, professional, wrestling. I have never seen anything like it. I have been watching wrestling for the better part of 30 years now and the only thing running through my mind while watching this match was, “I fucking love wrestling!” The only way this match isn’t match of the year is if they somehow manage to have a third match this year that is better. Nothing will touch this. It is just that good. The story telling alone in this match set New Japan up for months if not the next year or so of storylines. Check the videos below. Set aside that hour. I promise you it’s worth it.

Dan Ryan

Dan Ryan was once the most feared and respected luchador in the world until the "Great DDT Disaster of '85" where Dan unfortunately DDT'd his opponent so hard into the ground that he opened a gate to the underworld that let unholy things into this world. After that, Dan refused to wrestle anymore but he's found new life writing and talking about his favorite hobbies here at Geekade. He pens the weekly Why I Love Wrestling series, co-hosts The Stone Age Gamer Podcast, expertly pairs video games with beer, and much, much more. Dan is a personality that Geekade simply would not be the same without.
