WILW: Undertaker’s Debut

This weekend sees the annual WWE Survivor Series event. It is one of the big four shows WWE puts on each year and is one of my favorites. Survivor Series has been up and down over the last few years since it lost its focus on the traditional 4 on 4 matches. However, it remains one of the big debut events. Big Poppa Pump, The SHIELD, Kurt Angle, The Rock and others have all made their debut at the Thanksgiving tradition. This week though, I want to highlight the in-ring debut of the Dead Man. It was 1990 and the Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase had let the world know that he had found the most terrifying addition to his team.

We had no idea who it would be. There was no internet then so there were no spoilers or rumors to follow. Magazines only reported after the fact. It was certainly a more innocent time and one that lead to some truly memorable experiences. Watching the debut live, with the incredible commentary of both Rowdy Roddy Piper and Gorilla Monsoon, I was completely awestruck. This man was unlike anything I had ever seen and instantly became my favorite wrestler. Just this week, 26 years after the fact, Taker announced he was back on Smackdown. In celebration of his return, and of the Survivor Series in general, enjoy the debut of the Phenom. And make sure to check back next week as we talk about some possible match of the year candidates and maybe a debut from Survivor Series 2016. Follow me on twitter and instagram, @geekadedan. Until then…

Dan Ryan

Dan Ryan was once the most feared and respected luchador in the world until the "Great DDT Disaster of '85" where Dan unfortunately DDT'd his opponent so hard into the ground that he opened a gate to the underworld that let unholy things into this world. After that, Dan refused to wrestle anymore but he's found new life writing and talking about his favorite hobbies here at Geekade. He pens the weekly Why I Love Wrestling series, co-hosts The Stone Age Gamer Podcast, expertly pairs video games with beer, and much, much more. Dan is a personality that Geekade simply would not be the same without.
