Jonathan Robert

Jonathan loves comic books and he loves coffee. Jonathan’s mother gave him his first taste of coffee at the tender age of 3 and it was love at first sip. He now needs to wheel around an IV drip of caffeine at all times or else he turns into a dark, monstrous creature that feeds on despair and makes babies cry. The local village-folk have kept him locked away ever since the “decaf catastrophe of ‘06.” When allowed out of his dungeon, he writes various articles for Geekade, including the monthly column, “Welcome to the D-List,” and records the "Mutant Musings" podcast with his geek-tastic girlfriend, Patti.

i always mix those old comics up but hatemonger either first appeared in fantastic four or avengers. i remember him in his kkk purple robes using his power of hate empathy (he can only control one emotion and its hate cause comics in the 60s lol) fabulously scary even reading it in my 20s in the early 2000s. kinda like god loves, man kills how it is still impactful to day

And he’s a villain that can absolutely work with the X-Men I think. Especially now considering the line of books is going for non-mutant villains.

i only had one gaming system as a kid: sega. sonic, mortal kombat, x-men, eternal warrior. got it for x-men so its better than nintendo for me lol. my aunt (who live with me and was only 7 years older) had nintendo and my cousins mom had money and so they got EVERY game system as they came out, handheld and otherwise. so even though i wasnt ever really a gamer i tested a few models out over the years

i just took it as magik as being funny/joking. like remember how she was after inferno? lots of jokes and banter, like spiderman but actually funny. and when they went to asgard for the first time? she mentioned how attractive she found bobbie and there was some actor they talked about once as well in one of those “lets go to the mall today” issues. thats the closest to any hint of a sexual orientation i can find from the top of my head. its never been a focus for her character so its not something i ever focused on either. if i knew of asexuality as a kid maybe i would have thought that but i didnt so i just held on to that bobbie comment and thought “she likes boys but she has so many issues she has no time for them plus outside of bobby there are like no options” lol. same with shan, like all the boys were paired off so it left shan and yana without options so its easy to make them both LGBTQ from a writting stand point. has any of the OG new mutants writers ever said their intention with those two’s sexual orientation? i know mystique was originally meant to be trans (born a male but used her shapeshifting to live as a woman) and she is supposed to be nightcrawler’s FATHER and destiny his mother but they felt it was “too risque for the times”

To my knowledge no one has stated anything about their intention. But either way, a writer could make it work if he or she wanted to. Of course someone could point to evidence and say “this is why she’s gay” and we can point to evidence and say “this is why she’s ace” but really a writer just needs to do it.
