PITAthon 2019: Stone Age Gamer Podcast vs. Contra: Hard Corps

Meanwhile, in the world of Contra: Hard Corps, Nurse Pretendo has some very difficult decisions to make…

Welcome back, everyone! It’s Friday, so it’s time to announce the first game of Geekade’s 2019 Pain-in-the-Ass-a-Thon. As if you hadn’t guessed it already, the event will be kicked off with some classically difficult co-op action in the form of the Sega Genesis shoot-em-up Contra: Hard Corps. Here are the details.

When: Saturday, August 10 from 10am-12pm

Who will be playing: This might just be the most difficult game of the day, so who better to tackle it and kick the event off proper than Dan and Kris from the Stone Age Gamer Podcast? Dan and Kris both have a metric ton of experience in the realm of retro action titles, but beating a Contra game is no easy feat. Will they be able to reach the end before their time runs out?

Why it’s a pain in the ass: Contra games are hard. This one had “hard” right there in the title! Seriously though, this game is completely insane. In a series known for its difficulty, this Sega Genesis exclusive entry held nothing back in the arena of making things tough as nails. Where the Contra titles that came before featured a pair of shirtless mercenaries with identical abilities, Hard Corps introduces characters with different weapons, so there’s another wrinkle of strategy to the overall experience. It’s 2-player co-op too, so the usual trappings of those kinds of games are along for the ride, including the ability to push one another off the screen to an untimely death. The frustration levels are going to be strong with this one.

So there you have it. We’re starting the PITAthon off with a bang. See you next week for Nurse Pretendo’s latest adventure, and the announcement of the PITAthon’s next game!
