Good Grammar Saves Lives

The English language is slowly disintegrating.

This is not a new thing. With the advent of the Internet and the ubiquity of texting, both good things to be sure, written language has gotten the short end of the stick. The immediacy of written communication has made the speed of composition more important than the accuracy of what is composed. Twitter threw a major wrench in the works and/or was a godsend for communication, depending on what side you’re on. By limiting the character count of a post, it legitimized the use of single letters to represent words, abbreviations, and acronyms in written communication.

Game of Spoilers 010: Mother’s Mercy (or Hope is for Suckers)

You didn’t think good things were going to happen, did you?

As the story lines (in general) clicked back into the groove of the novels, the season finale got better and better, and harder and harder to watch. This episode seemed designed to build hope only to crush it. Perhaps I am a literary masochist, but I am pleased.

I love a D-list character…and so can you!

Like discovering treasure on a remote island

The Avengers. The X-Men. Spider-Man. Batman. Superman. The masses love them, and rightfully so. If any of them were two-dimensional campy annoyances (which sometimes they were…I’m looking right at you, Adam West), they couldn’t possibly have stood the test of time as they have. Millions upon millions of people love these decades-old characters, so much so that a mighty few have poured massive amounts of money into making even more massive amounts of money by turning these characters into film franchises.

Game of Spoilers 009: The Dance of Dragons

Oddly enough, Dorne was pretty good!

In the twenty-four hours that have passed since this week’s episode, there have been many reactions and analyses, but the consensus of what I’ve read—from friends and critics alike—seems to be that Shireen’s death was a shocking reversal for Stannis and Dany’s flight was an exhilarating victory. Allow me to disagree with both of those assertions. I found this year’s penultimate episode rushed, poorly written, and ultimately underwhelming.

The Road back from the Nintendo World Championships 2015

The games have begun

Well, the road back from the Nintendo World Championships qualifying round was a bit different than the road there. In the days leading up to the event, I was nervous and excited. Upon my return, while I’m still glad I went, I can’t help feeling slightly disappointed, especially as I’ve discovered how differently things went at some of the other tournament locations.

Game of Spoilers 008: Hardhome

So, that winter everyone keeps talking about? Kind of a big deal…

That episode sure was exciting. Looking back, though, it’s a hard one to categorize. There’s no strong through-line, as there has been the last few weeks. We saw the machinations of many different characters, but then we saw the power of the White Walkers. Not to mix my geek-doms, but the game of thrones is like a quiddicth match. The beaters and chasers play a rough and dangerous sport, but that game is pointless because someone might find the snitch and end the game.

Wizard World Philadelphia: A First Timer’s Experience

The Wizarding World of Philadelphia

Wizard World Philadelphia ran from May 7-May 9 this year, held in the Philadelphia Convention Center. Some of this year’s big-name guests included Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau, Haley Atwell, David Tennant, Stephen Amell, and Burt Reynolds, plus there were cosplay contests and concerts, and a solid supply of panels. I attended Wizard World on Saturday, May 9 this year, and it was a nice little adventure!
