Comics are a Helluva Drug

Mission accomplished

Right now I’m typing this with one hand (get your minds out of the gutter) because in my other hand I hold something extremely dear to me (again, out of the gutter.  Stop making this uncomfortable for the both of us). In my left hand I hold a very significant comic; Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #1.  If that doesn’t sound familiar or important to you, that’s because it isn’t.

5 Awesome Things You May Not Have Noticed About Super Mario Maker

Easter eggs galore!

Super Mario Maker is coming, and it looks incredible. There has been some pretty extensive coverage on the game too, but I suppose that’s the great thing about a game like this. The real surprises aren’t what the it tells you can do with it, but what people will do once they get their hands on it. Still, Nintendo wouldn’t be Nintendo if they didn’t hide some cool stuff in there for long-time fans, and with so many of these deep cuts popping up in Super Mario Maker, it seems they’re giving Mario a much better 30th anniversary celebration than they did for the big two-five.

Return to Camp Firewood

Definitely still wet, but is it still hot?

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp brought back to life a world we loved 14 years ago and allowed us to revisit some beloved characters. It’s the prequel we wanted, but was it one we needed? A lot of it worked, some of it didn’t. There was some gold, some crap, and some fat that could have been cut. In this brave new world of second chances for pop culture properties that were long thought to be dead, it makes me wonder: should we always bring back the things we loved?

The Creamsicle, in Pie Form

Could you throw a little vanilla in there, make it like a Creamsicle?

One of my favorite pies to make is Key Lime Pie. It’s sour, sweet, and custardy. So, over an excellent meal of Italian food, my good friend and I (you’ll know him as Kris “Captain K” Randazzo) were discussing this wonderful dessert. I have a pretty stellar recipe from a trusted source – it rhymes with Looks Facilitated – and it never fails. At some point over the scallops in butter sauce, Kris wondered aloud, “Why couldn’t you make an orange pie?” I immediately began excitedly describing the simplicity of altering the Key Lime Pie recipe to accomplish this.

Creative Freedom

I assure you, they can do much more than write or draw -insert famous super-hero name here

As a child, I never paid much attention to the creators’ names printed inside of the comics that I collected each week. I was more interested in the characters within the books than who was responsible for their plight (wait, those characters are fictional?). As an adult, I pay close attention to the writers and artists that work on the books that I’m reading and have come to appreciate the work put into each title.

The Silent Hills That Almost Were

One Year Later, P.T. is still incredible

I based my decision to buy a PlayStation 4 partly on the fact that P.T. was on it exclusively. Mere months after I bought my new system and played the much-discussed demo for Silent Hills, P.T. was removed from the PSN store forever. In retrospect, this was without a doubt the smartest video game console purchase decision I ever made. P.T. is now, effectively, a rare game.

So long, Dr. Metts

A friend I’ve never met

Jonathan Metts doesn’t know who I am, but I feel like I’ve known him for years. For as long as I can remember, Radio Free Nintendo has been my favorite podcast, and I’ve listened to it nearly every week for what feels like forever.. Metts is the host of RFN, and after so many hours of listening to him talk about the games he plays, the video game industry as a whole, every facet of Nintendo, and even some of his personal life, I feel like I know him better than I know some of my actual friends. Sadly, this week’s episode marks his retirement from the show, and I’m really going to miss him.

Welcome to the D-List: Avalanche

Just some guy sitting on the couch

Avalanche was introduced in Uncanny X-Men vol. 1 #141 (Hey so was Pyro!) as part of the newly formed Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. He was created by legendary writer/X-Men savior Chris Claremont, who was also responsible for introducing many other new mutants to the Marvel Universe. The very first time we see this new Brotherhood, Avalanche is joined by other Claremont creations Pyro and Destiny, as well as returning characters Mystique and Blob.
