James Bond: 00Snake Eater

Snaaaaaaaake eater!

In 2004, the James Bond franchise was in a transitional period. Two years earlier, the disastrous Die Another Day had taken Pierce Brosnan from the cool intrigue and character development in Goldeneye to a CGI-overloaded sci-fi action movie that rivaled Moonraker in terms of sheer campiness. It would be another two years before Daniel Craig would make his debut, but until then the stealth action franchise Metal Gear Solid filled the gap with its third installment: Snake Eater.

Geekade Top Ten: Muppets

It’s time to light the lights

From Fraggles to frogs, The Muppets have seen a big resurgence following the smashing success of the 2011 movie starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams. Last year’s Muppets Most Wanted with Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey did admirably as well. Sesame Street was picked up by HBO in a deal that has the potential to get the seminal children’s series a broader audience and higher production values than ever before, and Fraggle Rock’s addition to Hulu has resulted in some big exposure and a brand new audience, leading to a new series based around the Doozers and a new movie supposedly in the works from Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Return to Camp Firewood

Definitely still wet, but is it still hot?

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp brought back to life a world we loved 14 years ago and allowed us to revisit some beloved characters. It’s the prequel we wanted, but was it one we needed? A lot of it worked, some of it didn’t. There was some gold, some crap, and some fat that could have been cut. In this brave new world of second chances for pop culture properties that were long thought to be dead, it makes me wonder: should we always bring back the things we loved?

Kung Fu Fridays: Chinese Super Ninjas

We now conclude our summer series with the best Kung Fu flick ever made!

Chinese Super Ninjas aka Chinese Super Ninja aka Five Element Ninjas is, without question, my favorite Kung Fu film of all time. Released in 1982 by the Shaw Bros., it was one of the last big, bloody, fight movies to come out of Hong Kong. Comedy martial arts flicks were gaining traction, thanks especially to Jackie Chan, and the audience’s desire for the over the top, bloody violence of the past was waning. As such, Chinese Super Ninjas did not do well at the box office. It seemed doomed to be forgotten, overshadowed by the absolute gems that had come before and the silly, more family friendly action that rose to prominence during the mid to late 80’s. (proving once again that the 80’s, despite what some would have you believe, were in fact, for the most part, terrible)

Geekade Top Ten: James Bond Movies

Which Bond is the best Bond?

Is Sean Connery versus Roger Moore the classic debate of who was the best Bond? It’s not because Sean Connery blows him out of the water. I’m talking early Sean Connery though. After Goldfinger, his high water mark as Bond, the quality of Connery’s movies continued on a downward trend and the series really ended up as a parody of itself through the 70s. This is why Roger Moore’s movies will not be gracing this list.
