How are these not cartoons already?

In episode 35 of the Stone Age Gamer Podcast, the topic of video game cartoons was discussed. Naturally, the Super Mario Bros. Super Show and Captain N the Game Master were mentioned, and it reminded me of a magnificent time. Nintendo used to have cartoons. Granted, in retrospect these shows don’t hold up so well. They have their charm, but when viewed critically, they leave much to be desired.

Fairy tale adaptations have seen an insurgence in recent years; from Maleficent to Snow White, and the fairy tale soap opera, Once Upon a Time, our interests in the classic tales have yet to wane. The newest addition to this fairy tale renaissance is from director Kenneth Branagh. His live-action Cinderella is due out in theaters on March 13th. If recent history is any indication, we all love comics. How else would the biggest Hollywood blockbusters be based on the four-color ‘funny pages’ so many of us grew up on? Marvel’s The Avengers is the third highest grossing movie of all time, with its forthcoming sequel set to break that record. The Iron Man and Christopher Nolan Batman trilogies are among the biggest franchises in recent years. Comics have even taken over our TV screens with the recent success of Arrow, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and The Flash, not to mention the countless cartoons we’ve seen over the decades.

Wrestling is a show. It is theatre. The wrestlers are athletes sure, but they are mostly actors who do their own stunts. There is a lot that goes into making a successful wrestler. Wrestlers must have a look, in ring skill, mic skill, presence, and the ever elusive “it” factor.
